Multiple postdoc, research engineer, and PhD student openings are available in our SOAR research group for our upcoming funded research project entitled "DeepSense: Deep Media Sensing for Software API Recommendation" (starting in January 2020). The project will develop solutions that automatically harvests, links, and makes sense of information units about APIs from various media -- API documentations, posts in question and answer sites, GitHub repositories, programming videos on Youtube, software development related microblogs on Twitter, CVE vulnerability reports, etc. -- to make effective and explainable API recommendations using the power of deep neural networks.
Our group works on the application of machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, program analysis, and software testing and debugging, to help developers code faster, reliably, and securely. We are currently focusing on building effective tools by leveraging software big data that are available in GitHub, StackOverflow, and many other sources. We have worked closely with several international companies, e.g., Microsoft, Adobe, etc. to solve real industrial challenges. Our research group has a track record of publishing at top conferences and journals in multiple areas, including software engineering (ICSE, FSE, ASE, TSE, TOSEM), and artificial intelligence (AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, JMLR). Despite our small size, based on publications in ICSE and FSE, CSRankings (http://csrankings.org/#/index?soft&world, on Sep 2019) puts SMU at the #32 position worldwide in the area of Software Engineering - #11 considering ICSE, FSE and ASE.
The candidates are expected to solve interesting research problems and publish at top conferences or journals. Alumni from our research group have successfully became tenure-track faculty members at leading universities (including University of Melbourne, Australia; Queen's University, Canada; Monash University, Australia; Mississippi State University, USA; etc.) and engineers and data scientist at high-tech companies (including Microsoft, Canada; Schroder Investment Management, Luxembourg; Hudson River Trading, Singapore; etc.). Our group is diverse with past/current members of the group coming from, e.g., China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brazil, Canada, and France.
